Since ancient times, Osaka has been a hub for maritime transportation. During the Edo Period in particular, it became known as the nation’s kitchen for its role as the center of Japan’s distribution activities.
At the Osaka MariTime Museum, you can enjoy studying how the people of Osaka have been connected to the seas, ships, and ports through looking at various exhibits. They include those on world maritime cultures and the history of maritime exchanges in Osaka, a city that has developed as a strategic point in maritime transportation.

Seas, ships and ports linking Osaka and the world

Osaka MariTime Museum was established to provide visitors with fun opportunities to learn about the history of Osaka, which has developed with seas and ports, and the deep relationship between people and the sea.
The main attraction is a life-size replica of the Naniwamaru, a Japanese trading ship called a “higakikaisen." The museum has four floors. The 1st floor is called “Welcome to the Sea," the 2nd floor is “The ship," the 3rd floor is called "The Prosperity of Osaka Port," and the 4th floor is “Seaways Bringing the World Together." Also, the museum has an open space where you can relax and take in the view of the bay area where ships are traversing from the comfort of the museum.
